Over the phone you can probably – but not always – get quoted for such a thing. They may ask, but you can say no and see if they’ll still give you a ballpark quote. To get exact, they may need some of the other info eventually.

You will not get an accurate quote without your SSN. Any quote you get will probably be a “best case scenario”. Insurance rates are based upon your claims history and credit rating. If they don’t know your credit rating they will give you the quote based upon the best possible rating. Premium rates are not linear. For example, company A may have a better rate for someone with very good credit but company B may have the better rate for someone with OK credit. Very few people qualify for the best rate and it’ll be very irritating selecting a company based upon a ballpark figure and have it completely wrong.

Talk to some friends and relatives and get a referral to a local agent that they trust. You’ll save time and irritation.

You can’t. Things like your age, your credit rating, and your insurance history all goes into the premium quote and are relevant information.

Don’t go to the websites, WALK into an office and get a quote.

I’ve been a victim of ID Theft before, but you can’t go through life being that paranoid about it.

The way it works for Nationwide Insurance is, they can give you a worst case senerio without your credit being pulled, but it isn’t really an accurate quote. Unfortunately, a huge part of how much your HO insurance will be is directly influenced by your credit report. Also you get discounts for prior insurance and if you are over a certain age. You are definately allowed to tell them that you want that worst case senerio, but if you are price shopping, all of your quotes are going to be rather crappy.

I’ll give you one right now – $600.

It’s completely invalid, of course. Without a credit score (requiring SS # and date of birth) you aren’t going to FIND an accurate quote. You need to have the credit SCORED, and each company uses different criteria.

So you’re wrong. They really DO need this info to give you a quote.

Go to a local agent. Have them run you a half dozen quotes. You’ll only have to give the information out ONCE, and you won’t have to worry about hackers or fake websites, because it won’t be over the internet.
